Growth through product portfolio expansion
When Magna Car Top Systems became a Business Unit of Magna Steyr at the beginning of the year, it added roof systems to its complete vehicle competence. The take-over and integration of Karmann Japan makes Magna Steyr one of Japan’s leading roof system developers and manufacturers and additionally strengthens Magna Steyr’s international market position in this field.
As the world’s biggest contract manufacturer with complete vehicle competence, Magna Steyr will turn this segment into a “one stop shop” that offers OEMs competitive complete solutions for small to medium volume production.
Growth through stronger internationalization
Magna Steyr will strengthen its world-wide network of Engineering Centers and intensify its resources in India and China. This strategy is already starting to bear fruit. At the beginning of February, Guangzhou Automobile (GAC) awarded Magna Steyr a contract for comprehensive engineering services for GAC’s new CUV program. The market launch is scheduled for the beginning of 2012.
Growth through new customers
Magna Steyr extended its proven all-wheel-drive product range by adding new differentiated product lines.
Two examples of innovative and tailored customer solutions are on display at our Geneva Auto Show booth. The “MINI Beachcomber Concept” is an example of the development of a concept car and realization of a prototype, while the Peugeot RCZ is an example of Magna Steyr’s ability to be a fully responsible general contractor from concept to series maturity and production of a complete vehicle (see separate press information).
Other new customer projects that showcase Magna Steyr’s superior technological capability include the painted body of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the complete vehicle production Aston Martin Rapide.
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Together with Mercedes-AMG, Magna Steyr engineered the aluminum body for the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and has been manufacturing this extremely lightweight body in its plant in Graz since December 2009.
Aston Martin Rapide
The Aston Martin Rapide is the first Aston Martin to be manufactured entirely outside of Great Britain. Following a period of intensive and successful co-operation, series production in Graz is now imminent.
These two vehicles are an impressive example of Magna Steyr’s competence in lightweight materials. Currently, Magna Steyr is the only automotive supplier worldwide to master Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) welding, using manual welding techniques to manufacture aluminum bodies.
